Dostinex (Cabergoline)

Common use

Dostinex belongs to a synthetic ergoline specifying a high affinity to dopamine D2 receptors, a potent long-acting inhibitor of prolactin secretion. Hypophysis releases a hormone – prolactin. This medication is prescribed for the treatment of the hormonal condition in the case of a higher level of prolactin in the blood plasma (hyperprolactinemia) to decrease or arrest the production of breast milk, except for after labor.

Dosage and administration

Your doctor should prescribe the correct dose of this medication. The regimen includes the application twice a week. The course duration is 6 weeks. The strength is changed generally at the 4th week when the prolactin level in the blood is equal to the norm.

Precautions

The main precaution is to avoid alcoholic drinks. Before starting the therapy with Dostinex, inform your physician about allergies, hepatic dysfunctions, psychiatric disorders, uncontrolled hypertension, hypertension when being pregnant or you are breastfeeding. Do not make sudden and quick movements to get rid off dizziness.

Contraindications

Dostinex is not recommended for an application in patients with hypertension of uncontrolled type or established oversensitivity to ergot derivatives, pneumonic, pericardiac, cardiac valvular, or extraperitoneal fibrotic dysfunctions in the anamnesis.

Possible side effect

Side effects may be characterized by signs of allergy (hives, rash, swelling of face and tongue, acne). The most common side effects are a cough or wheezing, dizziness, fainting, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation, headache, numbness.

Drug interaction

Notify your physician about all drugs or herbal supplements you have prescribed, especially if you take: blood pressure medications, sedatives, dopamine blockers; narcotic pain relievers (codeine), anti-anxiety drugs and antidepressants, muscle relievers, anti-epileptic medications, certain antihistamines. The application of this medication should be taken under the doctors’ supervision.

Missed dose

If you skip a pill apply it as fast as possible, but if the time of the next dose comes it is required to skip the first one dosage. Do not replenish the missed dose taking two pills at once.

Overdose

If the dose is considered higher than recommended immediate medical intervention is required. The most common symptoms of overdose are mental changes, nasal stuffiness, fainting, dizziness, or irregular heartbeat.

Storage

Keep Dostinex in a container which is dry and tight. The sunlight should be excluded and the temperature should be room between 15-30 C (59-86 F). Out of reach from kids and pets.
